Your Mehlville NEA Leadership Team has been busy. We actively participated in New Teacher Orientation – improving the agenda, providing breakfast and lunch one day, and leading break out sessions. Again this year I have scheduled monthly meetings with Superintendent Terry Noble. Vice-presidents Christy Mathews (HS), Patrick Bellinger (MS), and Lucy Rauch (elementary) also attended the first meeting. Mr. Noble is always willing to listen and follows through with our concerns. Additionally when an issue was brought to my attention a few days after my monthly superintendent meeting, I emailed Mr. Noble and within hours the matter was resolved to the teachers’ satisfaction.
Also a committee of Mehlville NEA members was formed to discuss course approval forms and guidelines with Dr. Lisa Counts. Through the work of this committee, teachers will notice some improvements to this process. We also collaborated on individual cases for the benefit of teachers.
One of the negotiated agreed items last spring was to value what teachers do and their time. One aspect of this was to have the district assessment committee review testing to determine the applicability of assessments at all grade levels. By teaming up with Dr. Vicki VanLaere, an online survey has been developed for elementary teachers to comment on the Dorn and DRA testing. This will be done by the district using the same Zoomerang program we use. With this program all results are anonymous.
Mr. Noble has asked me to communicate with our membership concerning some of the wording about the November ballot transfer issue. As you probably know the board chose “Proposition T” for Transfer – teachers, textbooks and technology. The district will be promoting the teacher aspect as a need to “attract and retain qualified staff”. We need to attract the best teachers available and retain all of you. This is the wording they feel will best communicate our needs to the voters. As you heard at the before school meeting, Mr. Noble wants to get Mehlville to county median and then to the top 25%.
Please remember to take the Health Risk Assessment at www. coventryhealth.com/wellbeing by Friday. This will save you the $20 monthly payment for the higher level insurance. Even if you are not using that option, you should take the survey to get a better idea of how your health and lifestyle interact.
I know everyone is very busy, but please consider giving some time to Mehlville NEA. We especially need someone to chair the Legislative Action Committee and the Elections and Nominating Committee. Please contact me via email or extension 7332, if you are willing to help.
Have a great school year. Enjoy your students. I know that you – and your students-- will have a wonderful year of memories by the end of next May.
Enjoy the school year, Kay Cappos As you may know Proposition T will be on the November 4 ballot. Proposition T would help lay a foundation for implementing the COMPASS recommendations. If approved, it would help the District retain and recruit highly qualified teachers, eliminate the budget deficit, and restore recent budget cuts in textbooks, supplies and tutoring without increasing the existing tax rate.
In the effort to continue open lines of communications with our community we wanted to notify you that Jeff Clobes is chairing a Proposition T committee. Mr. Clobes is a parent of three students in the District and has actively participated in COMPASS and the Facilities Planning Committee. If you would like to volunteer to help with this Proposition T committee please call 314.495.910 or e-mail Jeff here.
